India Eliminated from AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers as Song Ui-young’s Brace Secures 2-1 Win for Singapore
India’s Asian Cup Qualification Hopes Dashed by Singapore’s 2-1 Victory at Fatorda
In a crucial Group C clash at Fatorda, Singapore stunned India with a 2-1 victory, thanks to a brace from midfielder Song Ui-young. Despite a dominant first-half performance and an early strike from Lallianzuala Chhangte, India were unable to capitalize, allowing Singapore to stage a comeback and keep their AFC Asian Cup qualification hopes alive.
India started strongly under coach Khalid Jamil’s aggressive “attack mode” strategy, with Chhangte opening the scoring in the 14th minute with a powerful long-range strike. India continued to press, creating multiple chances through Liston Colaco, Mahesh Singh, and Sunil Chhetri. However, missed opportunities haunted the home side.
On the brink of halftime, Singapore equalized through Song Ui-young. A well-worked counter saw Glenn Kweh set up Song, who calmly finished past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to level the match at 1-1.
The second half saw India maintain pressure but leave gaps at the back. Singapore exploited this in the 58th minute, with Song scoring his second goal off a pass from Shawal Anuar, putting Singapore ahead 2-1. Despite multiple attacking substitutions and late chances, India failed to find an equalizer.
With this result, India fall to the bottom of Group C and are officially eliminated from Asian Cup contention. Meanwhile, Singapore closes the gap to group leaders Hong Kong to just two points, keeping their qualification dream alive.
